FRANK WALL DEAD

J. Frank WALL died in a sanitarium in
Bluefield Monday evening at 7:30 O'clock.  The remains were brought to Tazewell for interment. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.B. PLATT Jr. pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. Mr. CAMPBELL, pastor of the Baptist church, at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.  Interment was made in the new cemetary.  Besides a father, James W. WALL, deceased leaves a wife and one child to mourn his death.  He was 30 years of age. About two months ago he was stricken suddenly with some stomach affection and hurried at once to the hospital, where an operation revealed a seriously disturbed condition of the stomache, not thought, however, to be beyond a cure.  For sometime he seemed to be recovering.  Other complications, however, developed, which made recovery impossible.  The large crowd at the funeral and burial bore testimony to the esteem in which he was held.  He was an energetic young man, faithful and upright, and his untimely taking off in the prime of life is unspeakably sad.  His young wife has the deepest sympathy of the community.

-----

Seamen J.S. PEARY, Charles L. GREEVER, Armstead POBST and Everett JOHNSON, of the 5th naval district, stationed near
Norfolk, who were home the latter part of last week the guest of relatives, returned to their boats the first of the week. JOHNSON had quite an exciting experience a few weeks ago while performing duties incident to the protection of the harbor at Norfolk.  He with three others, were sentin a small boat to assist in connecting a net "somewhere on the Atlantic Coast" and in order to keep the little boat from upsetting tied it to the net work which was being stretched across the harbor. They were persuing their duties and had forgotten that the tide ebbs and flows in twenty hours in the lcoality. The tide came in so suddenly that the little boat was swamped, and JOHNSON and his three companions were preipitated in the water.  The had carried life belts with them, and only had time to put them on, when the little boat disappeared under the waves. The "mother ship!" was nearby, and their plight was soon noticed by the lookout, who sent another boat and recused them.  The boys attached to the Mosquite fleet on the Altantic coast will have many exciting tales to tell after the war and they are safely at home again.

------

Robert MOORE, attached to the mosquite fleet at
Norfolk, is in the naval hospital in the city, having recently underwent a slight surgical operation.  Mr. and Mrs. W.L. MOORE left Tazewell Tuesday night to be with him.

-----

Graham PRESTON, one of the young men from Tazewell serving with the coast patrol near
Norfolk, has been chosen as messenger to Admiral Dillingham, commandant of the Jamestown training camp.  Young PRESTON secured the appointment unsolicited, it coming as a great surprise to him.  He, and two others, have been stationed in comforable quarters near the headquarters of the Adminal. Graham is a good writer, his father receiving a letter nearly every day from him.  A letter received yesterday conveyes the intelligence that the job is one to which is attached must eclat.  The "Big Chief" looks after the boys, and sees that they get considerations and comforts.  PRESTON is tickled to death with his job.

-----

Robert BROWN, Raymond PEERY and James DOAK have been transferred from the patrol boats to the new training ground at Saunders Point, near
Baltimore.

FIRST MAN CALL RECEIVED GREAT HONOR

The first number of the Selective Draft, was 258, the Tazewell man bearing this serial number being Mr. Jessee ALTIZER of Harman, Va. He is a son of John H. ALTIZER, a married man and farmer. He will bear with him through life the distinction of being first on the list of the 221 men of this county to make up the draft of half a million men, drawn by the government.  It is not known how Mr. ALTIZER regards this distinction, but he should feel proud of it.

TAZEWELL BOY ACCEPTS POSITION WITH SOUTHERN

Mr. H.M. CHRISTIAN, of POunding Mill, left
Lynchburg Monday for Greensville S.C. where he has accepted a position with the Southern
Railway Company at a starting salary of $65 per month in addition to board, room and meals.  Mr. CHRISTIAN has been attending
Piedmont Business College since January 1st and is well qualified to render satisfactory service.

THE NEW ARMY

The first call to arms has been definitely made to complete the list of 687,000 men for the army of the Republic. The drawing from the list of the registrants of June 5th for the first call, was completed early last Saturday morning in Washington, and the names and numbers in the order drawn, was announced by wire all over the country.

The first number drawn was 258.  For this county this number was drawn by Mr. Jesse ALTIZER, of
Harman, Va. Every man registered was drawn, and will be subject to call in the order in which the drawing took place, the first numbers, as printed in this paper, being subject to the first call.  The right to claim exemption is granted to all the men called.  The proper blank forms, giving necessary instructions will be furnished by the examining board. The drawing showed some strange happenings. In some instances the numbers came out in bunches, taking two or more from the same family.  Early in the drawing, in other instances, long jumps were made. The lowest number in the first draft was the number 6, Mr. Brooks AKERS at Jewell Ridge.  Of the men drawn in the first draft 221 men will be selected.

The local exemption board, composed of Clerk G.W. GREEVER, Sheriff S.S.F. HARMAN and Dr. P.D. JOHNSON will pass upon each man drawn.  This board can exempt a man absolutely only upon one point, that of apparent physical disability.  Their report exempting a man who has dependents upon him will have to be passed upon again by the district board, the personnel of which is printed else where in this paper.

Industrial exemptions will be passed upon the the district board, also. The plans of the War Department are not thoroughly understood, but from best information abtainable, it is said that the men will be called for examination in numbers of 50, and will be given five days from the time they are cited to appear to present themselves for examination.

----

The clinch Valley News secured a list of numbers and corresponding names early on Saturday morning, and began posting the names.  The office and bulletin board was crowded all day by anxious people - some fathers and brothers, and some mothers and sisters and sweethearts, anxious to know whose names were in the list of those drawn for the first draft.  Some where glad, others sad, some mad, when their names, or the names of loved ones had been chosen.  It began to dawn upon them for the first time that this nation is at war.  A number of parents in this town and county have already "fought the battle" or at least its first skirmish.  Their boys are already in camp.  The "battle" is yet to be fought by anxious families in this and other sections of this great country.  Sorrow makes all mankind kin.  Before the first draft has been made, and closed, there is talk in official circles in
Washington of the second draft, which is said to be scheduled for some date between now and the first of the year.

LIST FROM WHICH TAZEWELL MEN WILL BE CHOSEN FOR RESERVE ARMY

Tazewell County's Quota is 221, Besides Large Number of Boys Who Have Volunteered and Are Now in Training

The following list of about five hundred neames has been compiled from an official report in the New York Times of the first draft.  Much difficulty has been encountered in preparting the list, and of course, it cannot be guaranteed to be correct. It is as near correct as we are able to give this week.  The numbers are published as they were drawn, and as they are liable to call.
Tazewell County will be called upon for 221 men, and twice that number is printed here, provided for exemptions of over 50 percent.  The official list has not reached the exemption board here yet from Washington, and consequently no date for assembling the first quota of the men given above has been fixed.  The law provides that the men shall be notified at the addresses given on their registration cards, and a list posted at the court house, but the liability is upon the man drafted to find out if his number has been called.

Mr. Clinton BARNS returned from Burkes Garden Sunday.

A great many people from the cove attended the burial of F.M. MOSS.

F.M. MOSS DEAD

The community was shocked greatly on last Sunday afternoon when the report came that Frank M. MOSS was dead. He had been ill only a few days. He was taken ill Wednesday and Saturday was taken to sanitarium at Richlands for treatment. An operation was decided upon at once as the only hope of saving his life. The operation was performed, but failed to relieve him. His death followed on Sunday afternoon. The remains were taken to his home in Burkes Garden Monday, where the funeral and burial took place attended by a large concourse of people ever assembled on such an occasion. He was a consistent and active member of the Presbyterian church. In the death of Mr. MOSS the county and state loses one of its best and most substantial citizens. He was prominent in business and church circles and a man of sterling worth and character, and a large circle of warm friends grieve that they shall see him not among them. He leaves a wife and a family of seven children, three sons and four daughters, viz: Clinton J., George H. and Oscar MOSS, Mrs. W. Jeff HOGE, Mrs. Dr. HIGGINBOTHAM, Misses Mary Bell and Lettie MOSS. Two brothers, Rush B. and George W., a twin brother, survive. Deceased was in the 69th year of his age, and the cause of his death was impaction of the bowels. It appeared that he had a premonition that he would not recover. After he was taken ill he divided his large estate among his children. He "set his house in order" and was ready when the Messenger called. We hope to publish next week a more suitable appreciation of the life and character of this good citizen.

It seems that the people throughout the little city and surrounding sections deeply regret the losing of the fine young men of companies D and B, who have been stationed there for the past four months. It is an assured fact, however, that the best wishes of the people go with them, and may the kind providence watch over them and eventually guide them safely home again.

Among those attending Children's day exercises at Bandy Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. J.A. PAYNE and family, Mr. J.C. WYNN and Mr. Robert HENKLE.

The examination of the three hundred additional men in Tazewell county for the new army, the names of whom were published in the last issue of this paper, was effected in the court house Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The local board, S.S. F. Harman, Dr. C.W. Greever, clerk and Dr. P.D. Johnson were assisted in the work by Drs. J.R. Hicks of Shawvers Mills and W. I. Painter, of Tazewell. The board has not officially passed on any of those examined. As soon as the verdict is rendered, the list will be published. The list published today embraces those who were selected by the local board from the first call, and is composed of about 190 men. The examination just concluded will likely show that one hundred more are qualified for service, and not entitled to exemption. This will give Tazewell county its quota with some to spare. The list of exemptions granted by the local board have been forwarded to the district board in Roanoke, and it is believed that a number of those already exempted by the local board will be called for service by the district board, and also that a number who were passed by the local board, may be exempted by the district board, upon the grounds that they are engaged in industries necessary for the prosecution of the war. The war department has planned that 30 percent of them who will make up the new army must report at the place of mobilization on the 5th of September. The provost marshal has issued instructions that the men making up the first quota will assemble at the court house twenty four hours before the time for the departure of the train, when the local board will take charge of the men and provide for them until the time for the departure of the train. Provision has been made for absentees and any other contingencies that may arise at the last minute. The local board of Tazewell county has discharged faithfully and impartially the arduous duties imposed by the federal government. They have shown no partiality to anybody, and if any errors have been committed, they have been in favor of the government. The government has received the benefit of every doubt. Dr. P.D. Johnson, the chief examiner for the government, conscripted Dr. J.R. Hicks of Shawvers Mills, and with his able assistance the work has moved along smoothly. If a physical defect escaped their eagle eyes, it was well concealed. The examinations have developed the fact that the presence of tubercular troubles in the county is not as common among the people as was thought by many. Excepting one or two communities in the county, there was little evidence of the increase in the number of cases in the county. The examination of a conglomerate lot of men, from every walk in life, is an interesting thing. Some of the young men would enter the examination room with smiles on their faces and state that they were in perfect health and ready to go to war at a moment's notice. Others would approach the examiner with a scowl on their faces and assume that they were possessed of every ailment to which humanity is heir. Mighty few of them, however, could "get by" unless they were real physical defects.

FIVE ARE INJURED

A frightful automobile accident occurred about two miles east of town near the residence of Mrs. Kate PEERY, last Saturday afternoon. That any of the parties escaped death seem almost miraculous.

Misses Jennie and Lena WILLIAMS, and Loise and Martha COULLING, of Richmond and Keister WHITLEY, driver of the car, of North Tazewell, were en route to Burkes Garden, when an accident happened to the car and the entire party were thrown over an embankment fifty or more feet high, and received painful, and at first thought to have been fatal injuries to two of them. The four ladies were taken to a
Bluefield hospital shortly after the accident Saturday afternoon and soon rallied from the injuries. The most serious injury was a broken arm.

The accident occurred about
noon. The car was being driven at a fair rate of speed, and just after rounding a curve collided with the truck of Allen CHAPMAN, which was returning to town. After striking the truck the driver of the automobile is said to have turned his head to see what damage had been done to the truck, when he lost control of the car and went over the bank and plunged headlong down the hill to the creek below. An eye witness to the accident says the car turned over four times, and that in its first somersault, two of the ladies were thrown out. The boy driver and a little negro boy who was riding on the running board, remained with the car until it stopped and turned over. Young WHITLEY was under the car when help arrived. His injuries were slight, only two or three ribs being broken. Dr. J.R. HICKS, of Shawvers Mills, who was returning from town, was near the scene of the accident a few minutes after it occurred and rendered first aid. Other physicians from Tazewell were summoned, and in a short time every available doctor was on the scene.

The Misses WILLIAMS were taken at once to the Bluefield Sanitarium, and the Misses COULLING were brought to Tazewell, where their wounds were dressed. The physicians here dicided that the Misses COULLING's condition was serious and they were also taken by automobile to the
Bluefield hospital.

The Misses COULLING had been guests of the family of J.D. GREEVER in Burkes Garden, and being charmed with the section, persuaded the Misses WILLIAMS to spend their vacation there. The two latter ladies arrived here from
Richmond Saturday mourning and were met at the train by the Misses COULLING, when the trip to the Garden was undertaken. The latest reports from the ladies is that they will all recover.

TAZEWELL COUNTY, FARMERS ASSOCIATION

Saturday, August 11th, a most enthusiastic farmers meeting was held here. Judge George E. CASSELL, of Radford, made a very interesting talk on co-operation and increased food production and county gent W.L. KIRBY, of Henrico, gave the results of several successful cooperative buying and selling organizations. The constitution and bylaws were drawn up and adopted, and the following officers and directors were elected: E.W. LAWSON, President, R.S. MOSS, Vice President, M.L. PEERY, Secretary and Treasurer, E.K. CROCKETT, W.A. THOMPSON, W.O. BARNS. A number of new members were taken in at the meeting and several orders placed with Mr. M.L. PEERY, Sec and Treasurer. Since then a large number of orders have been recieved and everything points to a most successful organization. The possibilities for this organization are very great, in fact almost unlimited and all farmers should give it their unwavering support and cooperation. R.R. WALL, County Agent.

The recent sesson of the Farmers Insitute, held at
Blacksburg, was largely attended, representatives of every section of the state being present. Governor-elect Davis was present and made an address, as did also, Prof. Harris HART, the nominee for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Neither of these gentlemen made any references to politics in their speeches, the papers state. There were present from Tazewell, the following: Dan THOMPSON, Mrs. Dan THOMPSON, W.O. THOMPSON, H.S. BOWEN, Grat BOWEN, W.G. O'BRIEN, John THOMPSON, J.W. DANIELS, L.D. SNAPP, and family, Edgar STEELE, R.R. WALL, and W.H. DUNIGAN.

POSSES COLLIED

Two posses, one headed by Constable Boss BROWN, of Richlands, and the other headed by Mr. PAYNE, of the staff of the State prohibition commissioner, collided on the mountains near Richlands one night this week, and opened fire on each other and exchanged some forty pistol shots, without a casualty, and only one hit scored, this being in the leg of Chap OSBOURNE, one of the posse.

Boss BROWN and his posse started from Richlands after dark for a still house on Big Creek, and Mr. PAYNE and his crowd started from Raven for the same place. BROWN'S crowd got there first and captured the still and started down the mountain with the 'worm' and other parts of the machine. PAYNE'S crowd were coming up the mountain and spied the crowd coming down and immediately concluded that the moonshiners had gotten wind of their presence in the community and were moving camp. They waited until they got in calling distance and each posse called to the other to halt. Each halted and drew their guns and commenced to fire. Each posse scattered to places of safety behind rocks, logs, fences and other things, and shot at each other until exhausted. Finally one of the posse surrendered and were disarmed, and the discovery was made that they were each pursuing the same moonshiners and the same still. It is said to have been a fortunate thing that the men were such poor marksmen.
