Cedar Bluff, Jan. 5 - R. J. Deavers of Renick WV was the guest of his sister,
Mrs. Joe Wilson and Mr. Wilson and family, the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. James Bowling, Mr. E. W. Bowling, of North Tazewell, and Miss Thelma
Lowe, of this place spent Christmas day with Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Wyatt and
family.
Mrs. J.W. Shawver, of
Bluefield, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wyatt and daughter, of Richlands, were also
guest of the Wyatts' a few days last week.
Rev. and Mrs. Balser and son spent the past week end with Mr. and Mrs. Buena
Chambers and Mrs. Chap Chambers.

WILLIAM GIBSON -- William Gibson died suddenly last Friday at his home in Rocky
Gap, Bland Co. Mr. Gibson was the son of Samuel Gibson and Jane Hinegar
Gibson and was born in Tazewell county on September 24, 1858. Funeral
services were conducted Sunday at the Rocky Gap Methodist Church.
MINNIE KINDER -- Mrs. Minnie kinder died at her home in Lynn Hollow last Friday
morning. Funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday. Mrs.
Kinder was the wife of Simon O. Kinder, who survives. She was the
daughter of the late, Mr. and Mrs. William Tiller. Besides her husband there
survives two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Stephenson and Mrs. J. T. Stephenson, of the
Tazewell Road; two brothers, W. J. Tiller of Pinhook, WV and S.G. Tiller of
Pineville WV.
BERTIE TABOR -- Mrs. Bertie Virginia Tabor, 67 years of age, wife of the late
E. I. Tabor, died at her home in West Graham last Friday. She was born
December 3, 1875 on Clear Fork, and was the daughter of Calvin Ruble and
Statira Sarver Ruble. She is survived by her mother, of West Graham; two
daughters, Mrs. Sibyl James, of West Graham, and Mrs. Marie Bustos, of
Pittsburg; one son, Zenith B. Tabor, of West Graham; three brothers, D. W.
Ruble and E. N. Ruble, of near Bluefield, Va. H. C. Ruble, of Williamson, one
sister, Mrs. Mollie Shawver, of Shawves Mill; one half brother, M.A. Ruble of
West Graham, three half sisters, Mrs. W. H. Fleshman and Mrs. Tom Moore, of
west Graham and Mrs. O. E. Turley, of Bluefield Va. Funeral
services were conducted from the West Graham Methodist Church Sunday afternoon.
MRS MALLIE MOSS -- Burkes Garden has lost another of its valuable and useful
citizens. Mrs. Mallie Moss died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. A.
Holmes at Marion Saturday night. She had been a guest of her daughter,
where she was taken ill. The funeral service took place Monday afternoon
in the Central Church in Burkes Garden. Rev. E. H. Copenhaver, of Marion,
Rev. T.A. Freeman of Tazewell and Rev. Manson B. Tate, of Marion, were in
charge of the service. Surviving are these children: C. J. Moss, Burkes
Garden;
Oscar Moss, Maryland; Mrs. J.N Higginbotham, Tazewell; Mrs. George Peery,
Ceres; George Moss, Loudon county; Mrs. Mary B. Groseclose, Ceres; Mrs. E. A.
Holmes, Marion. Mrs. Moss was a daughter of Clinton and Sarah Gillespie
Barnes of the Cove, and was thereby related to many Tazewell county's leading
families. The deceased lady visited her daughter Mrs. Higginbotham, in
Tazewell frequently. She was widely known for her many attributes of
character, and her devotion to her family.
MILLIE ANNE MEDLEY -- Mrs. Millie Anne Medley, 81, died at her home in Thompson
Valley Sunday. She had been in poor health for sometime. The
funeral and burial service took place Tuesday, in charge of the Rev. P. C.
Foote. The service was in the Pleasant Hill church and the burial in the
cemetery adjacent. Surviving are these children: Billy Midley, Mrs.
Pollie Harrison, Mrs. Nora Beavers, Mrs. Mollie Hall, and four brothers and one
sister.
M.J. HANKINS -- M. J. Hankins aged 69, died at his home in Roanoke
Monday. Funeral services were conducted at Oakey's chapel Wednesday
afternoon. Mr. Hankins was a native of Tazewell and was a son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Hankins. The Hankins operated a department store here
for many years in the building now occupied by W. W. Mac Co. Surviving
are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Hankins, daughter of the late George Peery of
Tazewell; three daughters and one son: Miss Dorothy Hankins, Miss Mildred
Hankins,
and Miss Ruth Hankins, of Philadelphia; Jack Hankins of Spartansburg, SC;
and the following brothers and sisters; Miss Etta Hankins, Mrs. E. S. Thomas
and J. B. Hankins, of Roanoke; Miss May Hankins, of Richmond; Mrs. F. A.
Weaver, of War WV; T. B. Hankins and C. M. Hankins, Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. Henry Kiser, Mrs. R. L. Hilton, Mrs. Irene Peery, James W. Harman and
Raymond peery of Tazewell attended the funeral and burial in Roanoke.
NANNIE ROSE BARRETT -- Mrs. Nannie Rose Barrett, 74 years of age, died Tue in a
Richlands hospital. Mrs. Barrett was born in Russell co and moved to
Richlands in 1890. She is survived by her husband, Henry Barrett, and two
daughters, Mrs. Thelma Cunningham, and Mrs. Gladys Belcher, both of
Richlands. Funeral services were Thursday afternoon at the Richlands
Baptist church.
Feb 19, 1943 --
RALEIGH E. WHITT -- Raleigh E. Whitt, 74, died at the home of his son, Billy
Whitt, at Raven; Saturday morning. Mr. Whitt was born in Tazewell
county and engaged in farming for 35 years, later moving to Honaker, at which
place he made his home for 33 years. There survives three daughters, one
son; nine
grandchildren, and a half brother. Funeral services were held Monday
afternoon from the home of his son at Raven and burial was near Drill, Russell
County.
JAMES W. BANE -- James W. Bane, 82 years of age, died Friday morning at his
home at White Gate, Va. He was a well known farmer of Giles County where he had
been a life long resident. Mr. Bane is survived by his wife, who before
marriage was Miss Bessie Davidson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James W.
Davidson, of Tazewell and a sister to the late Miss Julia Davidson, for many
years a teacher in Tazewell High School. Besides his wife there survives
the following children: James E. Bane, of Red Wing, Minn.; John D. Bane, of
White Gate; Eugene M. Bane, of Grundy; William D. Bane, of White Gate; Miss
Mary H. Bane, a teacher in Tazewell graded school. Funeral services were
conducted Sunday afternoon from the home and burial
was in the family cemetery.
MARVIN L GILLESPIE -- Marvin Luther Gillespie, aged 60, grocer and filling
station operator on the Princeton-Oakvale road, died Monday morning, following
an illness of one week, due to acute indigestion. The body was brought to
Gratton Wednesday and servcies were held at Mt. Loivet church at two o'clock
Wednesday. He is survived by his widow, who before marriage was Miss
Maude Ellison of Tazewell, and two daughters.

Union visited his parents Sunday.
Miss Annie Lambert is doing nicely after submitting to an appendix operation at
Mattie Williams Hospital.
Mrs. John Quesenberry is a patient at Mattie Williams.
J.S. Gillespie has had an attack of flu, but is able to be out now.
Mrs. Laura Myers was taken to the hospital, Saturday, suffering from a heart
attack.
Miss Ruth White of Raven, was the weekend guest of Miss Gladys Johnson and Miss
Helen Jackson.
Miss Wanda Thomas came home from C. V. clinic Tuesday, where she submitted to
an appendix operation last week.
Miss Doris Ringstaff spent Sunday night with Mrs. Nicewander at Cliffield.
Billie McGee returned to school Tuesday after being out on account of sickness.

BOYS IN THE SERVICE
Samuel L. Harman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Harman, of Tazewell, has been
transferred from Buckley Field, Colorado, to Will Roger Field, Oklahoma City,
Ok.
Roy R. Gregory, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Gregory, of Gratton, who is with the
N.A. Coast Artillery of the U.S. Army. The soldier has arrived safely in
North Africa, according to word received by his parents.
Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Nelson, of North Tazewell, have been advised that their son,
Pvt. Oscar Kirk Nelson, has arrived safely in North Africa. He is with
the antitank group.
Private Donald Buchanan has been visiting in his home at Gratton this week. He
is stationed in New York.
Pfc. Reece Bourne spent an 8 day furlough with his brothers. He is from
Massachusetts.
Corp Herbert Leffel and wife were visiting Corp. Leffel's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Leffel fro the weekend.
Pvt. Clyde Nunley, stationed at Nashville Tenn., has been visiting his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John Nunley at Tip Top.
Howard Stevens, of Camp Maxey, Texas., has also been visiting at Tip Top, the
guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stevens.
Among those recieving their silver navigators wings during the graduation
exercises at Hondo and San Marcas were: Lt. Harold S. Leffel and W. C. Leffel,
of Shawver Mill, Va.
The announcement is made today that Charles Pepper Gillespie, Tazewell Lawyer,
has been commissioned a Lieutenant in the US Navy. He is expected to
leave for his post in August.
MRS. C.W. COMPTON -- Mrs.
C.W. Compton, aged 65, died Friday at her home at Falls Mills. Funeral
services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Brushfork Methodist church and
were in charge of the Rev. Floyd Furrow. Mrs. Compton is survived
by her husband, as son, Claude Hager, by her first
marriage; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Shrader, of War Eagle; Mrs. Sarah Daugherty,
of North Kenover, Ohio; Mrs. Jon Falway, of McCar, Ky and four brothers, David
Hager, Dunlow, WV; John Hager, McCar, Ky; Daniel, of Ransom, Ky, and Allen of
Nemours.
MRS. ELIZABETH SHULER JONES -- Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at
the home at Five Oaks for Mrs. John Jones, who died last Thursday night.
Before marriage Mrs. Jones was Miss Elizabeth Shuler, of Grayson county, being
the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. William Shuler; she was born on Nov. 17,
1871. She was highly esteemed for her leadership in the civic, moral and
spiritual life in her community. Surviving is her husband and the
following children; Marvin L. Jones, of Five Oaks; Raymond Jones of
Tazewell; Mrs. Bane Vandyke, of Jewell Ridge; Mrs. W. F. Kinder, of North
Tazewell; Mrs. Tom Walk, of Tazewell and Mrs. John Kinder, of North Tazewell,
18 grandchildren and one great grand child, also one brother, Rev. James
Shuler, Lawrence, Kansas; one sister, Mrs Myrtle Phillippi, Illinois, and a
step mother, Mrs. W. M. Shuler, of Marion, Va.
JOHN L. ASCUE -- John L.
Ascue, aged 72 years, a prominent farmer of Paint Lick, died last Friday at his
home after a long illness. He was born and reared in Cedar Bluff.
On December 16, 1896, he married Miss Mae Steele, who survives. In
addition to his wife there survives five daughters and three sons; Dewey
and John Ascue, Sarah Ellen Ascue, Edith Ascue, of Cedar Bluff; Robert
Ascue, stationed with the army in Nebraska, Anna Mae Ascue, of Kentucky, Mrs.
Charlie DeBoard, of Cedar Bluff, and Mrs. Grace Porter, of
Thompson. There also survives one brother, Russell Ascue, of Cedar Bluff,
and two sisters, Mrs. Nel. Beavers, of Washington, DC and Mrs. Alafair Jones,
of Abingdon, Va. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the
home and were in charge of the Rev. Mr. Ross, of Bristol, the Rev. P.C. Foote,
of Tazewell, and the Rev. Mr. Fleenor, of Lebanon. Active pallbearers
were; James Steele, Will Jones, Douglas Jones, Charles Martin, Harvey Ascue and
Joe DeBoard.
MARY ROBERTS MCCUTCHEON -- Mrs. Mary Roberts McCutcheon, mother of J. R.
McCutcheon, of Bishop, died suddenly last Sunday at her home in Bishop at the
age of 79 years. Mrs. McCutcheon has three grandsons in the armed forces;
Major Robert McCutcheon, serving in Australia; Lt. (j.g) John R. McCutcheon,
stationed at Norfolk and Sgt. James W. McCutcheon, at Gulfport, Miss.
Funeral services and burial took place Tuesday in Clay City, Kentucky.
AMANDA WITTEN -- Mrs. Amanda Witten, member of a pioneer and prominent Tazewell
family, died Saturday at the home of her son, Henry Witten on Plum Creek.
Funeral services were held from the Pisgah Methodist church Monday afternoon,
conducted by the pastor, the Rev. P. C. Foote. Interment was in Maplewood
cemetery. Mrs. Witten is survived by two sons, Henry Witten and Andrew J.
Witten, deputy sheriff, both of Tazewell; and the following daughters:
Mrs. Paul Parker, of Ponca City, Okla; Mrs. Coralie Stinnett, of Hays Kansas; Mrs.
B. B. Tunnell, of Bluefield, Va. Her husband John H. Witten and two children
preceded her in death a number of years ago. Thirteen grandchildren and
ten great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Witten was born on October 12,
1860
JOSEPH DAVIDSON -- Joseph P. Davidson, 51, died last Saturday night at the
verterans hospital in Huntington, WV., where he had been a patient for 3
weeks. Mr. Davidsons first wife was Miss Ruby Suiter, of Graham, who died
several years ago. To this union two sons survive: Joseph P. Davidson
Jr., with
the US Army air forces at Wendover Field, in Utah, and Suiter Davidson, who is
stationed at Great Lakes, Ill. with the navy. In December, 1938, Mr.
Davidson married Miss Sallie Litz, of Graham, who survives. Besides
his sons, the following brothers and sisters survive: Mrs. C.M. Fisher, of
Nemours, W. V.; Ancil Davidson, of Nemours; Mrs. Kemp Morton, of Charleston
WV.; J.M. and W. S. Davidson, both of Kentucky.
HELEN BALDWIN -- Mrs. Helen Baldwin, widow of the late O. S. Baldwin, died at her
at Five Oaks Wednesday afternoon, after several weeks illness from a stroke of
paralysis. Before marriage she was Miss Helen Greever, daughter of the
lat B. B. and Mrs. Greever. There survives two sons, Tate Baldwin,
serving with the US Army in Alaska; Herman Baldwin, of Pittsburgh; a sister,
Mrs. Frank Pyolt, and a brother, W. W. Greever both of Five Oaks. Funeral
services will be held Monday afternoon upon the arrival of Tate
Baldwin, from Seattle, Wash., who was enroute to his post in Alaska, after a
visit with his mother. The services will be held from the home and will
be in charge of the Rev. K.M. King.
