March 19, 1948 --

JOHN S. WHEELER -- John Samuel Wheeler, aged 62, died at his home in Pounding Mill Monday after an illness of two months.  Mr. wheeler was born in Tazewell county and was the son of the late Dock and Sarah Vandyke Wheeler.  He served in the artillery corps from Novemember, 1904 to 1907.  He is survived by his wife and four sons: Henry J., of Oceana; James E, of Red Ash; Charlie T., of Tazewell; Herman L., and Robert H., of Pounding Mill, and two daughters, Miss Martha Lou Wheeler, of Pounding Mill and Mrs. Virgie Gibson of Rogersville, Tenn. and three brothers.  Tom, of Yukon, Robert, of Pounding Mill and Charles of Beckley.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning from the home.

REECE RUSSELL -- Reece M. Russell, of Cedar Bluff, died Monday in a Richlands hosptial.  He was a son of the late John and Alice Russell and was a verteran of WWI.  He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Lance Luttrell, Peggy, Pauline and Robert Russell, of Cedar Bluff; Mrs. G. V. Olive of New York City, and the following brothers and sisters: Jeff Russell, Petersburg; Charles Russell, Bluefield; Mrs. James McGuire, Chilicothe, Ohio; Mrs. Waltera Hash, Bluefield and Mrs. Pat Mann, of Richlands.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church with the Rev. W. E. Mustard, of Tazewell and the Rev. A. B. Winford, of Richlands, in charge.

GEORGE R. GILLESPIE -- George R. Gillepie died at this home in Crockett's Cove last Thrusday of a heart ailment.  He was a son of Mrs. Ava K. Gillespie and the late R. G. Gillespie and he was unmarried and had continued to live at the Gillespie homestead while employed as a miner by the Pocahontas Fuel company at Bishop.  He is survived by his mother and four brothers: H. T. Gillespie, of Berwind, WV; Joseph Gillespie, of Keen Mountain; Kenneth and James Gillespie, of Tazewell.  Funeral services were conducted at the Gillespie home in Crockett's Cove Saturday, and were in charge of the Rev. G. T. Jordan, pastor of the Methodist church at Bishop.  Interment was in the family graveyard.

BUREN E. WALKER -- Buren E. Walker, aged 61, died Tuesday in a Mount hosptial.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Rocky Mount Methodist church with interment in High Street Cemetery.  Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Mrs. Garnett W. Walker, on son, two daughters, three sisters and two grandchildren.  Mr. Noel Walker of Tazewell is a brother.  Mr. and Mrs. Walker and N. M. Walker Jr. attended the funeral.

Aug 6, 1948 -- 

H.K. MATTHEWS -- H.K. Matthews, 91, died in a Richmond hospital on July 22nd.  He was born in Hillsville on June 23, 1857 and was the son of Nancy and William Matthews.  He lived for a time in Tazewell and made his home with his niece, Mrs. V.L Stevenson. He was a member of the Baptist church and had a splendid reputation in the community.  He is survived by two brothers, Emmett who lives in Tennessee and Wesley Matthews, of Bluefield Va. who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.  He was buried in Riverview
cemetery, Richmond.

MRS. CHAPMAN REMINES -- Mrs. Chapman Remines died Sat. at her home in North Tazewell.  Funeral
services were conducted Tue. afternoon from the Assamblies of God Chruch iin North Tazewell. Mrs. Remines is survived by her husband, section man for the N & W railroad; six children; Mrs. Clarence Danner, of Seaboard;  Misses Blanche, Pauline and Virginia Remaines, Ernest and Kenneth Remines, and two adopted children, Missess Jean and Alice Remines of North Tazewell.

SERGEANT GEORGE HOUCHINS -- Last rites for S. Sergeant Geo. Burley Houchins, Jr. son of Burley and
Emma Jones Houchins, of Richlands, were held Wednesday afternoon at the christian church in Richlands.  Military services at the grave were conducted by the Richlands Legion post.  Sergeant Houchins enlisted in the Air Corp division as a radio man in 1942 and took his training at Scott Field, Illinois.  He went overseas in February of 1944 and was killed in an airplane explosion in April, 1944, in England.  He was 21 years of age
at the time of his death. 

ARNOLD ECKDAHL -- Arnold Eckdahl, of Pocahontas, police officer and deputy sheriff for Tazewell county for the last sixteen years, died Sunday morning at Bluefield sanitarium.  Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at the Methodist church in Pocahontas.  The Rev. J. A. Crosier, pastor of the Pocahontas Baptist church, officiated.  He was assisted by the Rev. Edward W. Hughes.  Mr. Eckdahl was born in DuBois Pa.  He is survived by his wife and two sons: Andrew, of Lexington, Kentucky and Edward, of Pocahontas.

Dec 3, 1948 --

Mrs. Rhea Moore gave a party Saturday afternoon at her home on West Pine St., for her aunt, Mrs. A. C. Gardner on her 83rd birthday.  Mrs. Gardner is a sister of Mrs. Moore's mother, the late Mrs. J.F. Ireson and is the last remaining member of her family.  Mrs. Moore was assisted by her cousin, Mrs. H. D. Bryant, of North Tazewell.  A number of relatives and friends from Tazewell and Richlands attended.

Litz Harman Jr., son of Mr and Mrs. Litz Harman, of Dry Fork, remains in a very critical condition in the Bluefield sanitarium.  The doctors hold out no hope of his recovery.

Dr. Rufus Brittain underwent an emergency appendicitis operation on Wed. A.M. in the Bluefield sanitarium.  The operation was successful and he is doing nicely.

Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Rhudy, of Thompson Valley, had as their guests on Thanksgiving Day, their son J. B. Rhudy, Mrs. Rhudy and daughter, Carolyn, of Oceana, WV, and their daughter, MRs. B.E. Jones, Mr. Jones and children Mary, Nancy and Richard, of Bluefield.

WILLIAM M. LANKFORD -- William M. Lankford died last Wednesday morning at his home in North Tazewell, following an illness of two years.  He was a native of Tazewell but had made his home in Bluefield WV during most of his life.  Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon from the North Tazewell Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clyde Watkins and the Rev. W.E. Jelf officiating.  He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Mary E. Hill, and three children, William M. Jr. and Mrs. Dorothy Kelley, of Lorrain, Ohio, and Johnny, at home.  There also survives his mother, Mrs. Ervin Lankford, of Bluefield, and the following brothers and sisters, Miss Nellie Lankford and Mrs. Grace Romeo, of Bluefield; Mrs. Stella Witt of North Tazewell;  Luther Lankford, of Cleveland Ohio, and John Lankford, of Tazewell.

JOHN R. GRINDSTAFF -- John R. Grindstaff, 77 years of age, died last Saturday at this home on Cavitts Creek.  He was a native of Carter County, Tennessee.  He is survived by his wife, the former Josie Taylor, of North Carolina, three daughters and six sons: Jerome, Frank A., David A., Woodrow and John Jr., all of North Tazewell and Charles, of Radford; Mrs. W. B. Cregar, of Bishop; Mrs. C.E. Witten and Miss Nancy Grindstaff, both of North Tazewell.  The six Grindstaff brothers were members of the armed forces in WWII.  Funeral services were conducted Monday from the North Tazewell Methodist Church, with the Rev. W. E. Jelf in charge.

MINNIS LAWSON -- Minnis Lawson, a former citizen of Burke's Garden, died suddenly last Saturday in Baltimore, Md.  He was 53 years of age.  When a young man Mr. Lawson was a missionary, stationed at Grenfel, Alaska for a number of years.  Upon returning to the United States he located in Baltimore where he engaged in real estate and financial market and was a partner with a companion missionary in the Lycett Gift Shop, which was named for his partner.  His is survived by his widow and a sister, Miss Garnett Lawson, of Wytheville.  Mr. Lawson was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Lawson of Burke's Garden.  Burial was in Wytheville.
