MYSTERY SURROUNDS GRAVE OPENING -- The grave of Mrs. James Lawson in Maplewood Cemetery was opened sometime during the night of March 2, but investigating officers have not found an explanation for the act.  Mrs. Lawson, who died in childbirth, was buried Saturday, March 1.  She was a resident of Springville.  The Maplewood cemetery caretaker, Sam Johnson, was the first to notice that the grave had been disturbed when he was working on the grounds Monday morning, March 3.  The flowers, and top sod, were not on top of the grave as they had been placed.  Upon closer investigation, by the caretaker, and county officers, the sod was found down in the grave close to the coffin, and the flowers were scattered in the loose soil throughout the grave.  The screws on the coffin box were loosened, as if the coffin had been opened, but the body was not disturbed in any way.  The body was facing west, instead of the customary east, which at first led investigators to believe the coffin had been removed and then replaced, but they later believed that to be impossible, since it would have required the efforts of at least six strong men, and hours of work.  Dudley Funeral Home in Bluefield was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
