JOHN A. BOYD -- John Allen Boyd, 84, North Tazewell, and formerly of Swords
Creek, died at the home of his son, Peery Boyd early Tuesday morning after a
lengthy illness. He was born in Russell county the son of the late Silas
and Lydia Patrick Boyd. He had followed the vocation of farming and
mining, having last been employed by the Pocahontas Fuel Corp. at
Amonate. He was a member of the UMW of A Local 6633 and the Freewill
Baptist church. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Mollie Ball
and nine children: Mrs. Mary Call, Newport News, Mrs. Maxie Green, Johnson
City, Tenn;, Mrs. Gussie Evans, Coeburn, Mrs. Beulah Sparks, North Tazewell,
Mrs. Dorothy Sparks, cleveland Ohio, Serman Boyd, Fawn Grove, Pa., Peery Boyd,
North Tazewell, Eugene Boyd, Felton, Penn. and Clarence Boyd, Madison Heights,
two sisters; Mrs. Ella Farmer, Raven, and Mrs. Eva Howard, Roanoke, and one
brother, Charlie Boyd, Swords Creek. He is also survived by 49
grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren. Funeral services were to be
conducted from the Adria Advent Church Thrusday afternoon at 1pm (EST) with
Rev. Walter Reedy; Rev. Carter Wells, Rev. Junior Sargent and Rev. C.H. DuBois
in charge, interment in the Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va. The body
was removed from the Hurst Scott Funeral Home to the home of his son, Peery
Boyd.
SARAH ANN BOYD -- Sarah Ann Boyd, age 85, of Honaker, Va. died at the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital on Wednesday,
June 30, 1965.
She was a member of the Free Pentacostal Hholiness Church. She was preceded in death by
her husband Oscar L. Boyd. Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Neal Webb,
Richlands, Mrs. Perry Dye, Honaker, Mrs. Erskin Miller, Honaker, Dewey Boyd and
McKinley Boyd of Swords Creek, Mrs. Stanley Dye and Mrs. Leo Miller of Swords
Creek. Funeral Services were held at 11am July 2 at the Swords Creek Block Church. Rev. Carl Robinson, Rev.
Grat Horton and Rev. Efford Adams conducted services. Burial followed in
the Green Hill Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers
were grandsons of Mrs. Boyd.
MRS. ANNA BELL BOYD -- Mrs. Anna Bell Boyd, 46, wife of John
Robert Boyd, Raven, died in a Richlands Hospital late Sunday
afternoon following a lengthy illness. Born in Russell Co and the daughter of Mrs.
Maggie Stamper Sharp of Raven, and the late Frank Sharp, she had spent her
entire life in the Raven area.
Surviving besides her husband and mother are: two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Ann
Jones, Chicago, Linda Sharon Boyd, of the home; six sons, Roger, Harold, Eddie,
Darrell, Sonny, and Timmy Boyd, all of the home; one step daughter, Mrs. Mary
Elizabeth Reynolds, Swords Creek; one step son, Perry Boyd, Greenville, S.C.; nine grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Helen Christian,
Raven, Mrs. Robert Elswick, Raven. Mrs. Clyde McGlothlin, Venia, Mrs. James
White, Doran, Mrs. Nora Gross, Dublin; four brothers, Lee, Raven, John Tampa,
FL, Samuel, Danville, and Henry, address unknown. Funeral Services were
conducted from the home of her mother, Mrs. Maggie Sharp on Horton Ridge,
Wednesday at 2pm, with Rev. Grat Horton and Rev. Roland Stump in
charge. Interment took place in the Sharp Cemetery.Sep 2, 1965 --
CHARLES H. BURTON -- Charles H. Burton, 69, Bluewell, WV, and former resident of Richlands
died
Aug 19th at Bluefield. He was the brother of John
D. Burton, Richlands, and William, of St. Paul. He was survived by his wife, four
sisters and four daughters. Funeral services were held Sunday at
Bluewell.
PATTON C. HYLTON -- Mr.
Patton cleveland Hylton, age 66, of Richlands, Va. died suddenly at
his home Monday morning. He was born in Buchanan county,
Va, a son of the late Charlie and Catherine Nipper Hylton, both Buchanan County natives. He had made his home
in Richlands for two years. he followed the
vocation of mining having worked for the Page Coal Co for 20 years. Pocahontas Fuel
Co. at Bishop, Va. and Jewell Valley
Coal Co.
He was a member of the UMW of A Local No. 6797, Page Va. and a minister of the Free Pentecostal Holiness Church for 15 years. Surviving are
his wife, Mrs. Laura Jewell Hylton and fourteen children. Eigth sons:
Mack Hylton, Barberton, Ohio, Charlie W. Hylton, Lexingon S.C. Alden Hylton,
Uniontwon, Ohio, John and Rondeau Hyton, Kent, Ohio, James Hylton, Mt. Vernon,
Ohio, and Chester Hylton, Richlands, Va. Six daughters: Mrs. Pauline Harropp,
Washington C.H., Ohio, Mrs. Janie Sisk, Barberton, Ohio, Mrs. Faye Sisk, Page,
Va., Mrs. Cleo Walton, Washington C.H., Ohio, Mrs. Peggy Dixon, Grantsboro,
N.C. Mrs. Lucy Mayberry, Memphis Tenn., Two brothers: Theodore Hylton, Beckley,
WV, and Isaac Hylton, Amigo, W. V. Five sisters: Mrs. Leonard Sneed, Bandy, Va.
Mrs. Avery Smith, Jewell Ridge, Va. Mrs Clyde Church, Concord NC. Mrs. James
Hamrick, Bloomington, Ind. Mrs. Harvey Dye, Amigo, WV. Thirty
nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral
services were conducted Wed. afternoon at 3pm (DST) from the Richlands
Tabernacle, with Rev. Grat Horton, Rev. Ancill Childress and Rev. B. H. Miller
in charge. Burial in the Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va.
JOHN A. NUNLEY -- Funeral services for John A. Nunley, of Rt. 1, North Tazewell, were held Saturday afternoon from
the Horsepen Church of God. Burial followed in Grandview Memorial Garden, Bluefield-Tazewell Road. The Union Funeral Home at
Pocahontas was in charge of the arragnements.
JAMES A. EVANS -- James A. Evans, 58, of Rt. 2, North Tazewell, died friday
afternoon at his home. He was born in Crocketts Cove, the son of the late
Lewis and Sally Ratliff Evans. He was the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Peery
Evans. He had been an employee of Cole Baking Company for the past 24
years. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, two sons, six
grandchildren, one sister and one brother. Funeral services were held
Monday afternoon, from the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, burial followed in Maple Hill Cemetery.
MRS. MARY K. BURKS -- Mrs. Mary K. Burks of Bluefield, sister of the late Sam. D. May of
Tazewell, died last week. Funeral services were conducted Monday
afternoon from Hawkins Funeral Home in Bluefield with Dr. C.H. Patterson
officiating. Interment followed in Monte Vista Cemetery. Pallbearers were David,
Rucker and Terry Burks, Sam Leece, Sam Hardy, Sam D. May, Jr., George Bowen and
E. R. Gillespie.
MINNIE L. BRADSHAW TABOR -- Mrs. Minnie Lee Bradshaw Tabor of Roanoke for the past four years, died at
her home in Roanoke, Wednesday morning on her 79th
birthday. She and her late husband, Robert J. Tabor who preceeded her in
death in 1958, had operated a General Store at Deel for 24 years. She was
born at Repass, a daughter of the late Charles S. and Mary Stinson Bradshaw,
both Russell County natives. She spent more than
50 years of her life in Russell County and had been a life time member of
the Bradshaw Methodist Church at Repass. She was also a
member of the OES, Florence Ann Chapter No 133 at Grundy. Survivors are:
one son, Robert J. Tabor, Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs. W. I.
Bondurant, North East, Pa.; One sister, Mrs. Osa I. Bundy, Arlington, Va. and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 from the Hurst-Scott
Funeral Chapel with Rev. A.E. Gingrich of Tangler Island, and Rev. E. Stanley Ross of
Belfast, in charge.
DEWEY ROOSEVELT BRAGG -- Dewey Roosevelt Bragg, age 45, of Hill Creek Section,
Richlands, was
instantly killed Wednesday the 25th, at the R & B, Coal Mines, by slate
fall, on Fork Ridge. He was the son of the late Peter Litz Bragg and Sarah
Gogan Bragg. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a veteran of WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia Ward Bragg; two step children, Judy
and Diddie Ward at home; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Bragg, Hill Creek; one sister;
Mrs. Pansy Lester, Hill Creek; and two brothers, Marvin Bragg, Doran and Roy
Bragg, Jewell Valley. Funeral service
were conducted from his home on Hill creek, Friday afternoon at 2, with
Rev. Neil Webb and Rev. Henry Roberts in charge.

CHRIS C. SPANGLER -- Chris C. Spangler, 75, Cedar Bluff, died at his home
Friday afternoon following a lengthy illness. Born in Floyd County, he had followed the vocation of
mining until ill health forced his retirement in 1948. His last
employment was with the Pocahontas Fuel at Amonate. He was a member
of the Calvary Baptist Church at Cedar Bluff and the UMW of A,
Local No. 6633. One son and one daughter preceded him in death.
Survivers are: wife, Mrs. Maggie Christian Spangler; one daughter, Mrs.
Virginia Crigger, Warriormine, WV.; four sons, Arnold and Don, Richlands,
Leonard and William, Cedar Bluff, one sister, Mrs. Mary Crigger, Akron, Ohio;
13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were
conducted Sunday afternoon at 1 from the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home with Rev.
Kenneth Shearer in charge, assisted by Rev. Earl Danoff and Rev. J. Peery
Smith. Burial followed in the Grandview Memorial Gardens at
Bluefield. Pallbearers were: Carroll
Barrett, Lawrence Bandy, Milbern Whitt, Harley Ray, Dorris White and Paul
Price.
JOHN C. TAYLOR -- Funeral services for John C. Taylor, 19, Tazewell, airman
killed in a car wreck in German, where he was stationed with the U.S. Air
Force, Nov 26, were conducted Monday at 2 PM at Tazewell Baptist Church.
Rev. Ortie Bradshaw and Rev Russell Asbury officiated with burial in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R.
Taylor of Tazewell. Survivors, other then parents, include three
brothers, Larry, David and A.R. Taylor Jr., of Tazewell; two sisters, Mrs. Ivan
Leontuk of Williamsburg, and Glenna Taylor of the home; and his grandmother,
Mrs. Rosa Taylor of Bristol. Greever Funeral Home was in charge.
MRS. BESSIE BALDWIN -- Mrs. Bessie Lee Baldwin, 75, Raven,
died at McCray's Nursing Home in
Abingdon, Thursday morning following a long illness. She was born
in Tazewell County, a daughter of the late David and
Mary Pruitt Taylor, both Tazewell County natives, and a member of the Hiliness Church. Her husband Dave Baldwin
preceded her in death seventeen years ago. Surviving are four children;
Mrs. Harvey Adair, Mrs. Daily Newberry, of Red Ash, and Kenneth and Clint
Baldwin, Davidson, Md. One adopted daughter, Mrs.
Loretta Newberry, of Chicago, one brother, John Taylor, of Jewell Ridge, fifteen grandchildren and fifteen
great grandchildren, also survive. Funeral services were conducted from
the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel, Sunday at 11 with Rev. Grat Horton in
charge. Burial followed in Cordle Cemetery on Road Ridge. The body
remained at the funeral home.
GRACE EMMALINE MABE -- Mrs. Grace Emmaline Mabe, 62, of Cedar Bluff, died at a
Richlands hospital
Wednesday, Dec. 1st. She was born in North Carolina, a daughter of the late Robert and
Nellie Newman Sanders and a member of the Freewill Baptist church. Her
husband Charlie Edward Mabe, preceded her in death in
1943. She was making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Burl Trent, Cedar Bluff,
at the time of her death. Survivors include three children: Mrs. Burl
Trent, Cedar Bluff, Ralph Mabe, Baltimore, Md. and Roger Mabe, Oxen Hill, Md.; two
sisters. Mrs. Cora Sparks, Richlands, and Mrs. Pearl Fields, Kingsport, Tenn;
two brothers, Carl Sanders, Williamsburg, and Calvin Sanders, Keen Mountain;
nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were
conducted from the Hurst-Scott Chapel. Friday at 2 with
Rev. H. D. Hampton in charge. Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill. Pallbearers
were: Richard Cole, George and Joe Griffith, Bill Mabe, Bobbie Sanders and Roy
Artrip.
HERBERT E. PENNINGTON -- Herbert E. Pennington, 49, a former resident of Bandy,
died Dec. 1 in the
Union Hospital at Elkton, Md. following an illness of three
weeks. He was born in Ashe County NC, a son of the late Lester and
Minnie Pennington. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Inex Stanley
Pennington and six children: Herbert, Kenneth, Mrs. Patsy Lee, Yuvonne,
Judy and Lina Penning, all of Newark, Delaware; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Keller,
Wayne NY, Mrs. Eula Liddy, Roanoke, Mrs. Earline Holmes and Mrs. Janet Peden,
of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Lawrence Pennington, Miamisburg, Ohio, and
Lester B. Pennington, in the US ARmy at Fort Hood, Tex. Three grandchildren
also survive. Funeral services were conducted Friday at 1 from the Dunford Town Church at Adria with Rev. Howard Kiser and
Rev. L.S. Haymore in charge. Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements.
MEREDITH STROUTH -- Meredith Strouth, 76, died suddenly at his home in
Richlands, Wednesday night. He had been in ill health for several
months. Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Mose and
Martha Ann Compton Strouth. He owned and operated a taxi in Richlands for
the past twenty years. He was
a veteran of WWI. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Turner,
Cedar Bluff; two brothers, Ira, Jewel Ridge, and Stallard of Seaboard.
Two grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral
services were conducted from the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel, Saturday at 2:30 with Rev. Joe Hankins in
charge. Burial followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery. The body remained at the
funeral home.
Pallbearers were: Don Web, Ralph Webb, Bobby Meadows, Jim Gordon, Amos
Armstrong, and Frank Mercer.
MAUDE ELLA TEMPLEMAN -- Mrs. Maude Ella Templeman, mother of Mrs. E. Ralph
VanDyke of Tazewell, passed away at her home at 823 Virginia Ave, N.E. Atlanta Ga. in the early morning of Tuesday,
December 7. She had been in declining health for quite awhile, and Mrs.
VanDyke, her only child, has been living with her to provide necessary
care. Mrs. Templeman was the widow of William Edward Templeman, and in
addition to Mrs. VanDyke, she is survived by two grandchildren, Phyllis and
Dorella VanDyke; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Milling and Mrs. Maye Mitchell, both
of Atlanta; and two brothers, Mr. James Duffell of Atlanta and Dr. Richard
Duffell of Macon, Ga. The body is at Spring Hill Mortuary, Atlanta Ga. Funeral
arrangements are incomplete at this writing.
