Mary Hazel Gillespie Puckett, 98, of Route 3 (Gratton),
Tazewell, was called home to be with her Savior Tuesday, April 3, 2001
following a short illness.
Born March 19, 1903 at Gratton in Tazewell County, VA, she was
a daughter of the late James Floyd and Belzora Alice Leffel Gillespie.
Mary was one of two surviving Daughters of the Confederacy in
Virginia. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War. She was a
homemaker and a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints for the past 36 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Howard Puckett;
a son, Alvin Warren "Dink" Puckett; a sister, Bertha McKinley
"Ted" Gillespie; a brother, Roscoe Hale Gillespie; 13 half brothers
and sisters.
She was affectionately know by many a "Granny
Puckett" and leaves behind a large posterity; two sons, Howard M. Puckett
and wife, Gloria of Liberty Hill, Texas and James N. Puckett and wife, Peggy
of Clarksville, Teen.; two daughters, Alice P. Huey of the home and Mary Ellen
Simmons and husband, Ben of Gratton; 21 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren
and 11 great-great-grandchildren; her two "special" boys, Bruce
Bourne of Gratton and Thomas Call of Monroe, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peery
& St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Bishop George Graham
officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Gratton.
