RITES TODAY FOR FORMER RESIDENT Mrs. Lula Grayson Hicks, 72, Dies At Sanford, N. C.; Family Was Prominent Here In Early Days Of Bluefield, Va. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Graham Methodist church, Bluefield, Va., for Mrs. Lula Grayson Hicks, 72,, whose death occurred Saturday at Sanford, N. C. The body of Mrs. Hicks will arrive in Bluefield, W. Va., this morning on No. 15 and will be taken to the Hawkins undertaking rooms, Bluefield, Va., where it will lie in state until the hour of the funeral this afternoon. The services will be in charge of the Rev. B. T. Sells, pastor, assisted by Dr. S. W. Moore, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of Bluefield, W. Va., and Dr. W. W. Arrowwood, of Tazewell. Burial will be in Maple Hill. Mrs. Hicks died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. F. Cook, where she had made her home for some time. Miss Mittie Hicks, her other daughter, was also at the bedside of her mother when the end came. Her only son, Ward Hicks, lives at Alberquerque, N. M. Mrs. Hicks before her marriage, was a Miss Grayson, a member of a prominent Bland county family. She was born January 9, 1859. With her young husband, the late Attorney J. W. Hicks, she located in Bluefield, Va., during the early history of the town and both she and her husband were prominent in church, social and civic affairs until the death of Mr. Hicks in 1919. Mr. and Mrs. Hicks were members of the Methodist church and active in church work. They built the handsome home on Hicks Hill, now occupied by the Baldwins. Mr. and Mrs. Hicks accumulated considerable property, a part of which is still owned by the estate here. In addition to her three children she is survived by two sister, and one brother, Mrs. W. H. Werth, of Tazewell, Mrs. A. H. Williams, of Wytheville and C. R. Grayson, of Denver, Col. She was the aunt by marriage of Spillar and W. B. Hicks, of Bluefield, W. Va. Active pallbearers - Frank Baylor, Lee Barbee Jr., Kent Witten, Lane Nash and J. P. Davidson. Honorary pallbearers - V. L. Sexton, Lee J. Barbee, B. D. Litz, J. E. Baylor, W. L. Nash, R. K. Crockett, George Crockett, J. M. Tanner, Dr. H. B. Frazier, H. C. Callaway, E. B. Witten, George A. Reynolds, E. H. Harman, C. T. Benbow, J. B. Saunders, S. N. Huffard, J. C. Holbrook, R. L. Gillespie, G. W. Pyle, and members of the Woman's Missionary society of the Graham Methodist church will act of flower bearers. |
