June 1938 - CIVIL WAR VETERAN
IS LAID TO REST
Milton Harris, Who Served In Captain Dirk's Famed Batallion, Dead of Senility; Was Well-Known Farmer. As a flag-draped casket bearing the remains of a Confederate veteran was being lowered to the last resting place, taps from an old rusty bugle were sounded by some unknown party at Pounding Mill Friday afternoon. The taps were for Milton Harris who served the south in Captain Dirks famous batallion which was made up of Tazewell County youth. They were in camp at Saltville, going from there to the east where Private Harris was captured by the Yankees and held prisoner in a dungeon for a period of six months. Many times he related to his sons that his only food was bread and water. At the conclusion of the war he returned to
Pounding Mill where he claimed a bride, settling down on a farm rearing
eleven children, seven of whom survive. Two served over seas during
the World War. Mr. Harris was a life-long resident of Pounding Mill,
having been on the farm for 64 years he owned at the time of his death.
The funeral was the largest ever attended at Pounding Mill. Stores,
mills, and other business places closed their doors during the funeral of
one of the oldest citizens who served for over fifty years as an election
