Hugh Caperton, of the Caperton family,
was a private in the Dunsmore war in the company of
Captain John Lewis, and was appointed lieutenant in Andrew Woods Company in
1783, and captain in place of Andrew Woods in 1737, and in 1793 he was sent by
the Governor of Virginia to raise a company of New River Valley men to rendezvous
at the North Bank of the Elk on the Kanawha to the Ohio, to protect the people
from prowling bands of Indians. Captain Caperton
represented Giles County, Virginia, in the Virginia Assembly in 1811.
